In 2006, May Day was revived in the U.S., the country of its origin, as a result of the upsurge of immigrant workers. This was a great step forward for the workers' struggle.

In 2005, union and progressive activists called for the revival of May Day and marched in Union Square that year.

As the economic crisis continues to deepen, despite media and government claims otherwise, the struggle for a jobs program, health care, housing and education for all, must be inextricably linked to the struggle for legalization for immigrants. One cannot win without the other.

This is why May Day 2010 is more important than ever. Washington has shown it is NOT willing to fight for the people. The health care reform was a bonus for the insurance companies. Washington bailed out Wall Street and ignored Main Street, M.L.King and Caesar Chavez Streets, which really need the bail out.

That is why we must take to the streets on May Day. We should march with those who are fighting for our rights. We should march with those who are independent of the politicians and the two big business parties, who know that it is the people who really have the power.

We must make the struggle of jobs for all central to May Day 2010. And we must denounce Senator Schumer’s plan on immigration, which is Sensenbrenner with another name.

Schumer recently said in New York City that the job crisis was waning, another total lie!

We must reject Senator Schumer’s plan, because it calls for a biometric i.d. card for ALL workers in the U.S.--not just the undocumented. It calls for a guest worker program which means institutionalized slavery. It does not address NAFTA-like policies which force workers to come to the U.S. Instead it calls for the further militarization of the border and puts immigration policy in the context of “security” issues, rather than workers’ issues.

We must say NO to the ICE raids and Joe Arapaio’s military terror in Arizona, where SB 1070 will legalize racial profiling, arrest and criminalization of immigrants.

The movement in this country is at a turning point. We can fight to build an independent, multinational people's movement with real teeth or we can continue to depend on those who have historically betrayed us. May Day can show the powers that be that we have confidence in ourselves not the rich or those who do their dirty work.

Join the May Day movement: Let the world know that the anti-racist majority is stronger then the Tea Party bigots! Workers losing their jobs and homes are joining these protests. The well-funded right wing is manipulating these workers to divide the people and to scapegoat workers of color, including immigrants.

May 1 is an international workers’ holiday. We appeal to African-American workers, whose unemployment rates have climbed to 50 percent in some cities, to join in solidarity and stand with all workers in this country and around the world for jobs and to end the absolute tyranny and greed of the rich.

On Saturday, May 1st, join the May Day marches around the country to demonstrate that only the people have the power to make change.

In New York City: “May 1st Where? Union Square!”
