Army Recognizes Outstanding Latino Youth

FORT KNOX, KY -- The U.S. Army has announced its continued partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) to recognize the educational excellence of some of the nation's top Hispanic high school students.

As the Leadership category sponsor of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards program, the Army will acknowledge the academic and civic leadership demonstrated by select students across the country. This HHF national youth leadership program annually identifies and honors young role models from 10 regions who maintain an unweighted 3.0 GPA and have an outstanding record of community service. These students reflect the Army's core leadership values: loyalty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, personal courage and teamwork.

"The U.S. Army celebrates the accomplishments of the outstanding students recognized through this important program developed by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation," said Lt. Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley, Commanding General, U.S. Army Accessions Command. "We're proud to partner with HHF in our mutual commitment to preparing our nation's youth for post-secondary success, to life-long learning and to becoming the next generation of leaders."

The Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards were founded in 1998 to identify and promote the next generation of Hispanic leaders and role models by celebrating their accomplishments in the classroom and community. Having honored over 1,500 students and awarded more than $3 million in educational grants.

The program allows Army to showcase its significant financial and educational benefits available through its ROTC program(http://www.goarmy.com/content/goarmy/rotc.html). Last year, the Army provided more than $285 million in scholarships to help young men and women reach their academic potential. Through the Army's education Web site, ArmyEdSpace.com(http://armyedspace.com/), the Army provides students, parents, educators with access to a wide variety of free Army resources, programs and areas of support. Whether considering the military as a future option or learning more about the no-cost programs available, the site is designed to familiarize users with a variety of educational opportunities and effective tools to empower young men and women to make informed decisions regarding their future.

The 2010 HHF Youth Awards program will be held from Sept.  – Dec. in 10 metropolitan areas: HoustonChicagoWashington, D.C.Dallas, Tempe, Los AngelesSan AntonioMiamiNew York and San Jose, Calif. In addition to recognizing students at these regional events, the Army will honor a National Leadership Award winner at the HHF National Youth Awards event to be held in Orlando, Fla., in January 2011.
