(Washington, DC)  Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) announced that he will co-chair the newly created Democratic Congressional Task Force on Job Creation.  Appointed to this post with Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D-OH) by Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (D-CT), Hastings will focus on legislative solutions to high unemployment.  The task force will bring new and innovative ideas to the table that will create jobs and restore the promise of the middle class.

“I am extremely pleased to take the lead on this critically important effort,” said Hastings.  “Americans want to work, and Congress can help.  This Task Force will focus on efforts that will spur job creation and put money in people’s pockets.  The Democratic Congress is not sitting idly by.  We are committed to improving the lives of all Americans.”

“With a national unemployment rate of 10.2% and a Florida statewide rate of 11.2%, it is imperative that Congress address bold ideas on economic recovery,” said Hastings.  “I plan to actively solicit ideas from my constituents – and anyone else – who has ideas big and small for ways to improve the economy and create jobs.”  Hastings will soon post a link on his website for visitors to write in their ideas, which he will consider throughout the Task Force’s ongoing efforts.  That link will be found at www.alceehastings.house.gov.

“By bringing this task force together we will be sure that voices from across our country are heard as we work to create jobs and grow the economy.  Congressman Hastings and Congresswoman Sutton have shown exemplary leadership on this issue and will do a great job shepherding this group forward.  The task force will help us bring the best ideas from our Caucus forward as we shape our agenda.  Momentum is building within the Democratic Caucus toward new job creation legislation that helps ensure our recovery is not a jobless recovery,” said Congressman Larson.

“Many parts of this country are struggling terribly with high unemployment and its attendant problems, including areas in my own district in South Florida,” said Hastings.

“We have a responsibility not only socially but also economically to ensure that our recovery reaches all Americans.  I am proud of the work of the Democratic Congress and I look forward to working with my colleagues and constituents to create jobs and improve lives.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings is Vice Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, a senior member of the House Rules Committee, and Co-Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission.
