Indianapolis Congressman Secures Federal Funding For Urban Projects, Public Education
Appropriations also included significant investments in public transportation, community health, public safety
Washington, D.C. – Congressman André Carson announced that he has secured over $2 million for local programs and organizations, including more than $700,000 targeted toward improving public schools and serving the educational needs of at-risk youth. The funding was approved as part of omnibus appropriations legislation passed today in the House:
“I am very pleased to announce that today the House passed legislation which includes critical funding for public education initiatives across Indianapolis. These projects will build on local programs that have already shown great success in our schools, both developing our children in the classroom and providing a nurturing after school environment, said Congressman Carson.
“Indianapolis is also receiving much needed investments in community health, public transportation, and law enforcement. These appropriations will rejuvenate some of our city’s most vital community services and create a safer, more desirable place to live for thousands of local Hoosiers.
“As these funds reach ongoing projects across Indianapolis, I look forward to seeing them used to better educate our children, protect our streets, and expand a more interconnected city,” added Congressman Carson.
COMMERCE JUSTICE AND SCIENCE
$50,000 – City of Indianapolis for IMPD Broadband Equipment
Congressman Carson secured $50,000 for the City of Indianapolis, which will be used by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to install wireless capabilities in their patrol cars. This new technology will increase the ability of patrol officers to maintain a strong presence in their communities by allowing them to wirelessly receive important information and reports rather than returning to their station for meetings and internet access.
$300,000 – City of Indianapolis for an Automated Fingerprint Identification System
The City of Indianapolis also received $300,000 to update the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). This vital tool will allow the IMPD to more efficiently and accurately collect, maintain and process fingerprints.
$100,000 – Indianapolis Housing Agency for IP Video Technology
The $100,000 secured for the Indianapolis Housing Agency will be used to purchase and install an IP video camera system in downtown Indianapolis public housing buildings that primarily house the disabled and senior citizens. This system will prevent drug trafficking and violence by ensuring that these housing facilities are properly monitored.
$100,000 – YWCA of Indianapolis for “Out of School” Project
The YWCA of Indianapolis will receive $100,000 for the “Out of School” project, which provides programming for 250 at-risk female students from Indianapolis Public Schools. This program will teach strategies to combat violence against women, develop financial literacy among teens and practice skills needed for graduation and post-secondary education.
LABOR, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AND EDUCATION
$200,000 – Clarian Health for Renovation of the Southwest Health Center
Congressman Carson secured $200,000 for Clarian Health that will be used to renovate and retrofit the Southwest Health Center. With these renovations, this health center will become a state-of-the-art medical facility, which will accommodate both primary medical services and OB/GYN services.
$100,000 – Indiana State University and Indianapolis Public Schools for the Urban Algebra Project
Indiana State University will be using this $100,000 award to partner with Indianapolis Public Schools on the Urban Algebra Project. This project will bring together mathematics educators from ISU and IPS to reform the mathematics curriculum for middle school education and to improve mathematics comprehension and performance among students.
$500,000 – Indianapolis Public Schools for Instructional Technology at Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy
IPS has also received $500,000 that will be used to purchase instructional technology for Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy, including computers and related technology infrastructure that can facilitate academic instruction.
TRANSPORTATION, HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
$500,000 – City of Indianapolis for an ADA Compliant Bus Facility at Michigan Road and 71st Street
The City of Indianapolis secured $500,000 to construct wheelchair accessible sidewalks and bus stops along the Michigan Road and 71st St area of Indianapolis, one of the areas most frequently trafficked by disabled local residents.
$300,000 – IndyGo for Bus Replacement
The Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation, also known as IndyGo, has been awarded $300,000 to procure two new busses. These busses will replace two of the many aging busses in the IndyGo fleet, allowing them to better maintain routes and promote interconnectivity throughout Indianapolis.
