"Living History" Symposium Celebrates Over 50 years ago, at a time when America was desperate for gasoline, money for war bonds, and a few good men, something extraordinary happened. 1,830 young women pilots from all over America quit their jobs and left the safety of their homes and families to go to Texas. Some came by car, some by bus, others hitched or rode the train, a few even came by plane, but they all paid their own way. They went to Texas because their country needed them. They went to Texas because they loved to fly. Join Fantasy of Flight as it honors Women's History Month, with part two of the Living History Symposium Series "A Passionate Pursuit" the WASP - Women Airforce Service Pilots which will take place Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28. Legislation in Washington, DC has just been introduced to award these American legends with The Congressional Gold Medal. The Congressional Gold Medal, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is the highest and most distinguished honor a civilian may receive. The award is bestowed for exceptional acts of service to the United States or for lifetime achievement. Fantasy of Flight's WASP exhibition, which includes aircraft as well as four separate bays that feature historical, anecdotal, and inspirational newsreel footage, original photos, and storytelling panels from the 1940s and today, will serve as the perfect backdrop for the historic appearances from these real,original WASP. |
