New Leadership Emerges on Joint Center Board of Governors

WASHINGTON – The Board of Governors of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, one of the nation’s leading research and public policy institutions, has elected corporate executive Roderick D. Gillum, Esq. as its Chairperson.

At its annual meeting this week, the Joint Center board also elected William E. Kennard, Esq., Managing Director of The Carlyle Group and Dianne M. Pinderhughes, Ph.D., a professor of Africana Studies and Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, as Vice Chairs.  Jacqulyn C. Shropshire, President and Owner of Momentum Limited, was elected Secretary and David C. Chavern, Esq., Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will serve as the board’s Treasurer.

Mr. Gillum, who has served on the Joint Center’s board for six years, is Vice President, Corporate Responsibility and Diversity for General Motors Corporation and Chairman of the General Motors Foundation, where he is responsible for global corporate social responsibility initiatives including community relations, philanthropy, business ethics, and diversity management within the company.  In addition, Mr. Gillum is Chairman of Motor Enterprises Incorporated, a subsidiary of General Motors, specializing in providing capital for GM minority suppliers.

Since joining General Motors in 1979, Mr. Gillum has held a number of executive positions with the company, serving also in two separate capacities at Saturn Corporation, a GM subsidiary. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Gillum earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University and a Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston. After being awarded a Sloan Fellowship, Mr. Gillum received a Masters of Science in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As Chairperson, he succeeds The Honorable Joyce London Alexander Ford, who stepped down at the end of her term on the board.  She is a retired U.S. Magistrate Judge, United States District Court of Massachusetts.
