NLIHC PRESIDENT HONORED FOR LEADERSHIP OF NATIONAL HOUSING TRUST FUND CAMPAIGN

Sheila Crowley Receives John W. Macy Award from the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

Washington, DC – On Thursday evening, the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) held its Annual Awards Ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Sheila Crowley, President of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, was honored with the esteemed John W. Macy Award. The award recognizes Ms. Crowley’s extraordinary achievement in bringing the nation’s attention to the affordable housing crisis.

“Dr. Crowley’s leadership of the Coalition and her determination to create a National Housing Trust Fund has changed the face of affordable housing,” said Nan Roman, President of the National Alliance to End Homelessness. “While the current economic crisis presents a challenge to communities’ efforts to end homelessness, the achievements of this year’s awardees represent a reason for hope and optimism. With the dynamic leadership of today’s awardees and other like them, we can transform our homeless system from one that is less focused on long stays in shelter and more focused on prevention and rapid re-housing.”

As president of NLIHC, Sheila Crowley has led the national campaign to enact a National Housing Trust Fund since 2001. A National Housing Trust Fund, which once funded will provide communities with funds to build, rehabilitate and preserve funds for the lowest income families, was signed into law in July 2008.

In addition to Ms. Crowley’s award, the Alliance also presented awards for outstanding achievement in the private and nonprofit sectors. The Private Sector Achievement Award was presented to Maria Cuomo Cole, Chair of the Board of HELP USA of New York. The Nonprofit Sector Achievement Award was presented to Anthony Love, President and CEO of Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County, Inc.

The Macy Award is named in honor of John W. Macy, Jr., the Alliance’s first Chairman of the Board, and is presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to ending homelessness in our nation. Ms. Crowley is the 13th recipient of the award.
