Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Welcomes Hundreds to Annual Alcohol Education Conference on Prevention of Dangerous and Underage Drinking

PR Newswire

GETTYSBURG, Pa., March 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) today opened its annual two-day alcohol education conference, bringing together more than 300 professionals, including law enforcement personnel and educators, to discuss strategies to reduce and prevent dangerous and underage drinking in a changing beverage alcohol landscape.

"New laws that took effect in 2016 dramatically changed how wines and spirits are bought and sold in Pennsylvania, allowing for more access and convenience than ever before," said Board Member Michael Newsome. "The changing beverage alcohol landscape is a tremendous opportunity to explore new ways to promote responsibility and reduce underage and dangerous drinking. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is proud to offer this free annual conference to bring together experts in education, law enforcement, public health and other specialties so we may all learn from each other, network with peers and collaboratively address alcohol education challenges in communities across the commonwealth."

This year's conference, "Navigating the Currents of Change: Promoting Responsibility in the Wake of Modernization," includes workshops on a variety of topics, including how to develop youth peer leadership programs; the correlation between alcohol and sexual abuse and violence; ways to effectively educate youth regarding the risks of and alternatives to drinking; the importance of campus-community partnerships; how small communities can deal with large alcohol-related events; the development of research-based prevention campaigns; responsible licensee service, and more.

The free conference is hosted by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board through a grant from the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association.

The PLCB regulates the distribution of beverage alcohol in Pennsylvania, operates more than 600 wine and spirits stores statewide, and licenses 20,000 alcohol producers, retailers, and handlers. The PLCB also works to reduce and prevent dangerous and underage drinking through partnerships with schools, community groups, and licensees. Taxes and store profits – totaling $15.1 billion since the agency's inception – are returned to Pennsylvania's General Fund, which finances Pennsylvania's schools, health and human services programs, law enforcement, and public safety initiatives, among other important public services. The PLCB also provides financial support for the Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, other state agencies, and local municipalities across the state.
