BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has been asked by the Chinese government to help it implement new national guidelines requiring the country's 1.6 million schools to provide students with daily physical activity. The move is an attempt to reverse a burgeoning obesity problem in China.

The U.S.-China partnership could help 270 million Chinese school children have access to daily physical activity.

Friday's presentation concludes three days of concentrated workshops in a groundbreaking partnership between the United States and China health leaders to tackle this issue. The workshops involved representatives of China's Sunny Sport Initiative, IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and national physical fitness and education organizations.

Friday's presentation will be given by Diao Tiemin, director-general of the New Times Children and Youth Physical Health Promotion Center and one of the chief designers of the national initiative, designed to influence China's 270 million school children. This presentation will include a summary of the conference proceedings, including the future plans for the U.S.-China partnership and Sunny Sports Initiative. It also will include opportunities for discussion and a question-answer period.
