AILEY’S 50-CITY GLOBAL CELEBRATION CROSSES THE U.S. & WILL CULMINATE AT BAM

Following sold-out engagements at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall and L.A. Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s (AAADT) 50-city global tour continues across the U.S. with engagements in Houston, Chicago, Boston, and Newark where Sweet Honey In The Rock will join the Company onstage for performances of Hope Boykin’s Go In Grace.  Another tour highlight will be the Company’s premiere engagement at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts  in Miami from April 16-19.   The 50th Anniversary U.S. performances will conclude at BAM, June 9-14  with “Best of” and “Classic Ailey” programs and a new production of Hymn, Artistic Director Judith Jamison’s award-winning tribute to Mr. Ailey.  Click for full tour schedule >>

AAADT’S REVELATIONS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN BROOKLYN & OTHER CITIES

To share Ailey’s mission of inspiring and educating through dance, Ailey teaching artists are in Brooklyn, NY public schools this week, sharing the innovative Revelations: An Interdisciplinary Approach residency with 6th – 8th graders at two different public schools, thanks to the support of J.P. Morgan National Art of Learning Sponsor.  Recently implemented in cities such as Atlanta, Chicago and Houston, and scheduled to visit Boston (April 27 – May 1), it utilizes Alvin Ailey's signature work, Revelations, as the inspirational framework for a comprehensive study of language arts, social studies and dance.  After completing the program, all participants are introduced to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater with a special performance featuring Ailey’s signature masterpiece RevelationsClick for more information on Ailey’s Arts in Education programs >>

AILEY II NEW YORK SEASON LESS THAN ONE MONTH AWAY

Ailey II recently completed its 35-city North American Tour and the 12 young dancers are busy preparing for their annual New York City season.  For two weeks beginning April 15th, Ailey II will perform “New Works” and “Repertory Favorites” at The Ailey Citigroup Theater.  Artistic Director Sylvia Waters welcomes everyone to come see the future of modern dance!

MASALA BHANGRA COMES TO THE AILEY EXTENSION

Masala Bhangra, the new Indian dance workout sweeping the nation, spices up The Ailey Extension this spring with classes taught by Sarina Jain beginning in April (Thursdays 9-10am). Masala Bhangra Workout™  modernizes the high-energy folk dance of Bhangra by blending it with the exhilaration of Bollywood (Hindi film) moves, as popularized by the recent Oscar Award-Winning film Slumdog Millionaire.  Benefits of the class include overall body conditioning and toning, and the building of endurance, stamina, and balance.  Sarina Jain is America’s first cross-cultural fitness star and the creator of the workout and hosts a program on Exercise TV and segment on Discovery Channel’s Fit TV.   Contact Jenna Petok (jpetok@alvinailey.org) if interested in attending the March 28th kick off class from 5:30-7:30pm .

A YOUNG DANCER; THE LIFE OF AN AILEY STUDENT RELEASED IN APRIL–BOOK RELEASED NATIONWIDE IN APRIL

Ailey is proud to announce the nationwide release of a new children’s book, A Young Dancer; The Life of an Ailey Student, written by celebrated arts writer Valerie Gladstone with photographs by noted professional photographer José Ivey.  Celebrating Ailey’s role in inspiring the next generation of dancers, A Young Dancer tells the story of Iman Bright, a thirteen-year-old student at The Ailey School in New York City.  The book follows Iman as she warms up at the barre, practices violin, is coached by the legendary Judith Jamison, Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and prepares for a performance with her fellow students.  A Young Dancer can be purchased at the Ailey Boutique.  (www.aileyboutique.com)  On sale nationwide beginning in April.
