[Atlanta, GA] Atlanta Falcons Chauncey Davis, Bishop Eddie L. Long and Samson Health and Fitness Center have recently partnered for a 6-week health, fitness and education program titled "Live Like Him: Project L.I.F.E." launching June 6, during both Sunday services at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia. During the launch event, Davis, in conjunction with the Diabetes Association of Atlanta, will host a special diabetes screening for the entire 25,000 member congregation. In addition to screenings, participants age 8 and older will be able to sign up for the 6-week program focused on exposing youth, adults and families to various physical fitness, sports and recreational activities.
"The Chauncey Davis Foundation is proud to partner with Bishop Long and the entire New Birth family to combat diabetes which affects millions of Americans and families around the world," Davis said. "When my mother lost her leg due to complications with diabetes, it changed everything. Diabetes did not just affect her, it changed the lives of everyone in my immediate family. My goal with this program is to prevent diabetes by working and teaching young people how to stay fit for life and educating them about diet and nutrition as well."
Each week, the program will engage participants in a new fitness activity at the Samson Health and Fitness Center located on the New Birth campus. Youth participants will engage in basketball, tennis and cardio exercises. Adult participants will focus on strength training and cardio exercises. The program concludes each Saturday with a 30-minute educational seminar hosted by the Diabetes Association of Atlanta. Registration forms for the Live Like Him: Project L.I.F.E. initiative will be available on Sunday, June 6, at New Birth and at Samson Health and Fitness Center beginning June 7.
"Studies show that habits can be broken in 6 weeks," Davis said. "From basketball to karate, our 6-week program will break bad habits and will get youth, adults and entire families active again." FREE DIABETES PREVENTION & MANAGEMENT CLASSES
The Diabetes Association of Atlanta will also host a series of prevention and management classes beginning June 10. The free classes, that are valued up to $1,000 per person, meet one night each week for the duration of the training program. Registration is free and open to the public.
