Black Sorority Holds Global Walk For Sisterhood

Chicago, Illinois –  On June 26, over 50,000 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority worldwide will link arms in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Synchronized Solidarity Walk for Emotional, Spiritual and Physical Healing. The walk is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of fitness. Stepping off at the same time worldwide, the Sorority will also use the occasion to underscore its unity, solidarity and strength as a sisterhood.

In tribute to the year 2010, the contingent will walk 2.10 miles.

Leading the walk will be International President Barbara A. McKinzie, who will be joined by members as well as friends and families who recognize the significance of making one's health a priority.

The walk will be held in local communities worldwide.

It is the second time that the Sorority has hosted the event.  The global walk was originally held in 2008, the year Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrated its Centennial. It yielded such results and sisterly love that Alpha Kappa Alpha decided to host it again.

Those participating include members from every region, as well as from Canada, Germany, the Virgin Islands, the continent of Africa and the Bahamas.  The walk is being coordinated by AKA's International Program Committee, chaired by Loann Honesty King.

In setting to this historic walk, participants will all face in the direction of St. Louis where Alpha Kappa Alpha's convention takes place from July 9-16.  Approximately 10,000 members are expected to attend the convention.

After completing the walk in their respective local communities, members will meet again at the Sorority's biennial convention on Sunday, July 10. There, in another show of solidarity for the message of fitness and sisterhood, members will walk in unison around the St. Louis Convention Center.

McKinzie explained that the walk adapts the ESP theme, the administration's programmatic focus.  This initiative specifically embraces Platform Five, which deals with Health Resource Management and Economics. It also sends a statement that Alpha Kappa Alpha is Energized, Strong and Powerfully united.

McKinzie added that as the Sorority meets to celebrate its first conference in its second century of life, it is appropriate that Alpha Kappa Alpha illustrate its support of the fitness message and its commitment to the sisterhood by galvanizing the membership around the March.

King extended an invitation to the worldwide community to join Alpha Kappa Alpha on this momentous occasion.

Said King,  "There is a connection between Emotional, Spiritual and Physical health. With women being afflicted by an array of ailments that can be mitigated through attention to the ESP elements that this walk symbolizes, we hope to send a signal that we are committed to taking care of our total health.  Ultimately, when we are Emotionally, Spiritually and Physically fit, we are in a better position to serve our family, community and the world!"
