Congressman Hastings Commends National Urban League On Centennial Anniversary

(Washington, DC) Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) and Congressman Al Green (D-TX) introduced a resolution congratulating the Nation Urban League on its Centennial Anniversary.  The League will be hosting a conference in Washington from July 28 to 31, 2010, celebrating 100 years of service to the country.  (VIEW RESOLUTION)

“From humble beginnings, the National Urban League has become the famed organization that it is today,” said Hastings.  “I am immensely proud of my own affiliation with the Urban League, going back over 35 years.  In 1974, I was one of the founding members of the National Urban League of Broward County, the 104th affiliate chapter in the United States.  Our goal then was to help alleviate some of the racial tensions felt throughout the community during desegregation.  I went on to serve on the original board of directors for the local chapter, where we worked to empower the community, increase educational opportunities for our children, and change lives through strong advocacy for essential public services.  I am pleased to add that we enjoyed numerous successes.”

“Although we can take great pride in the many outstanding accomplishments of the National Urban League, its work is far from over.  As part of its effort to galvanize greater action, the League recently began an initiative called “I AM EMPOWERED,” a social mobilization campaign of volunteers to increase awareness of the League’s efforts to achieve further progress in education, jobs, housing, and health care.  With 100 years of experience behind them, the hard working and dedicated men and women of the National Urban League are well poised to carry forth its important mission through the next century of progress,” Hastings further noted.

Joining Hastings as original co-sponsors include: Reps. Al Green, Sanford Bishop, Corinne Brown, Andre Carson, Judy Chu, Yvette Clarke, Steve Cohen, Gerry Connolly, John Conyers, Elijah Cummings, Danny Davis, Keith Ellison, Marcia Fudge, John Garamendi, Ruben Hinojosa, Jesse Jackson, Jr., Eddie Bernice Johnson, Carolyn Kilpatrick, Ron Klein, Barbara Lee, John Lewis, Betty McCollum, Greg Meeks, Gwen Moore, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Don Payne, Laura Richardson, Dutch Ruppersberger, Bobby Scott, Betty Sutton, Michael Turner, Chris Van Hollen, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Alan Grayson and Brian Baird.

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings is Vice Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, a senior member of the House Rules Committee, and Co-Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission.
