Detroit Branch NAACP to Unveil Freedom Walk

DETROIT,  -- The Detroit Branch NAACP will lay its building cornerstone and unveil its Freedom Walk in a ceremony to be held on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. at the Detroit Branch NAACP located at 8220 Second Avenue in Detroit. The cornerstone laying and building dedication will recognize corporate donors, Detroit Branch NAACP board members and staff who led the effort in securing the Detroit Branch NAACP's current headquarters. The Freedom Walk will consist of brick pavers etched in contributors names who made various donations.

"The laying of the cornerstone and the unveiling of the Freedom Walk is a significant part of Detroit Branch NAACP history and the history of this great Association as well," says Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, president, Detroit Branch NAACP. "The cornerstone is a representation of the foundation which our building is built upon. This is a foundation comprised of NAACP members, volunteers, corporate citizens, and the community. The Freedom Walk is a testament to those who are committed to the work the Detroit Branch NAACP does on behalf of civil rights, social justice and equality for all."

The Detroit Branch NAACP moved into its current location a little over two years ago. Its former location on E. Grand Blvd was approximately 6,000 square feet spread out over three floors. The present office is approximately 16,000 square feet distributed over two floors. The Detroit Branch NAACP presently has a capital campaign underway to finish the renovations for the current facility. Once complete the renovations will enlarge the meeting space, classroom and office space that will be utilized by the Detroit Branch NAACP's various committees and community partners.
