Family of Dr. Marvin Boomer, Jr. and Partner Nina Woodruff to Attend Adjourning in Memory Ceremony Honoring His Life and Legacy

June 9, 2025 by helpdesk1 |

OAKLAND, Calif., June 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The family of Dr. Marvin Boomer, Jr., along with his partner, Nina Woodruff, will attend the California State Assembly‘s Adjourning in Memory (AIM) ceremony in his honor today. The tribute, sponsored by Assemblymember Mia Bonta, will be entered into the official legislative record as a solemn recognition of Dr. Boomer’s life, achievements, and the devastating tragedy of his untimely and preventable death.

Dr. Boomer, a beloved educator and proud Oakland transplant, was struck and killed on May 28 during a high-speed police pursuit on East 21st Street near 12th Avenue. As the Boomer family mourns their profound loss, they are also demanding meaningful reforms to prevent future tragedies.

“We are humbled and honored that Marvin — the man I affectionately called ‘Mr. Wonderful’ — is being formally recognized at the state level,” said Nina Woodruff, Dr. Boomer’s longtime partner. “But we cannot ignore the circumstances that led to this tragedy. Marvin should still be with us. His death was preventable — and that haunts us every day.”

While the family affirms its support for law enforcement, they are calling on city and state officials to urgently reform California’s police pursuit policies, particularly in residential neighborhoods.

“We believe in public safety and support our officers,” said Tynesha Boomer, Dr. Boomer’s sister. “But reckless chases in residential neighborhoods are too dangerous. We need policies that protect lives — not endanger them.”

As the Adjourning in Memory ceremony proceeds, the Boomer family hopes this moment of remembrance becomes a catalyst for real change — in pursuit policy, city planning, and public safety.

“We want Marvin’s legacy to be one of justice, safety, and transformation,” said Nina Woodruff. “Let his memory move us forward.”
