Gay Task Force Lauds Prop 8 Developments
WASHINGTON — Federal Judge Vaughn Walker, who recently ruled that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, today denied a motion for a stay of the ruling from Prop. 8 proponents, meaning same-sex couples will again be able to marry in California on Aug. 18.
Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the same-sex couples who will again be free to experience the joy and celebration of legally marrying in California. This is a remarkable moment, stemming from the landmark ruling declaring Proposition 8 unconstitutional. That decision came down to a simple yet profound principle: People should be treated equally under the law. Lifting the stay puts that principle into practice. We thank the judge for his continuing sense of fairness and sound reasoning in this case.” The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
