HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF NEW YORK RESIDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE ONLINE TAX PREPARATION, ELECTRONIC FILING SERVICES

Food Bank For New York City Hosts CCIA Press Conference with Guest Speaker Congressman Rangel to Promote Free Tax Help for New York Taxpayers

What:              The Food Bank For New York City will host the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) at a press conference on April 6, 2009, with guest speaker Congressman Charlie Rangel to remind taxpayers there is still time to get free tax assistance in person at the Food Bank and online through the IRS’ and New York State Free File Alliance’s programs.

The Food Bank is the first free tax assistance program in the country to offer taxpayers two options for preparing their returns for free: one option is to have an IRS trained volunteer prepare a return for them and the other option is for the taxpayer to prepare their federal, state and city returns on their own with software available through the IRS and New York State Free File Alliances and coaching from tax experts and trained volunteers.

The online tax preparation option, called Free File, is a partnership between the IRS (www.irs.gov), 21 state tax agencies, including New York State (http://www.tax.state.ny.us/elf/free_efile_info.htm), and the nation’s electronic tax software manufacturers, including Intuit, the maker of TurboTax Freedom Edition (www.taxfreedom.com).

One group of volunteers -- trained student volunteers from the Frederick Douglas Academy -- will also be on hand at the site to demonstrate how they help taxpayers as a service to the community.
