Latino Residents Get Help to Become Citizens

HRC, ya es hora recruiting volunteers for civic engagement campaign with the Latino/a community

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization, is continuing its partnership with ya es hora, a coalition of faith, labor, media, and community-based organizations, to host a series of volunteer citizenship workshops as part of a civic engagement campaign aimed at providing immigrants with resources to apply for citizenship and to become active participants in U.S. democracy.  Participating partners will hold press conferences in Boston, Chicago, San Diego, and Phoenix to highlight the importance of the campaign.

“It’s time for the Latino/a, immigrant, and LGBT communities to come together to advance our common struggles for civil rights,” said Cuc Vu, chief diversity officer at the Human Rights Campaign. “We have common hopes and dreams and face a common set of challenges. ya es horaprovides an opportunity for us to all come together, and HRC is proud to join ya es hora in this powerful coalition.”

Volunteers will help Latino/a legal permanent residents complete applications to obtain U.S. citizenship and support other logistics during the workshop. For those interested, Spanish fluency is helpful, but not required.  HRC previously recruited volunteers for ya es hora citizenship workshops in Los Angeles, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Hollywood, FL; Denver, CO; Washington, D.C.; and Arlington, VA.

ya es hora began as a non-partisan effort to organize the Latino/a community for civic engagement in response to the immigrant mobilizations in 2006. Since 2007, it has helped process U.S. citizenship applications for more than 1.4 million Latinos/as. It is led by four national organizations and dozens of regional and local organizations including: Univision, the largest Spanish-language media network in the U.S.; Mi Familia Vota Education Fund; National Council of La Raza; National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund; and the Service Employees International Union. Together, ya es hora partners have a goal to move over 1 million Latino/a eligible legal permanent residents on the path to U.S. citizenship during 2009 and 2010.
