Fifteen Catholic religious-organization bankruptcies remained pending in the latest national survey, while major settlements across the country highlight ongoing compensation efforts and potential payment delays. Legal Bay encourages eligible plaintiffs who need funds for year-end expenses to apply now.
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Legal Bay LLC, a nationwide provider of pre-settlement funding and litigation funding services, is providing an updated overview of clergy sexual abuse litigation across the United States as significant bankruptcy settlements, reorganization proceedings, and compensation programs continue to develop.
For thousands of survivors of childhood sexual abuse, the legal process has extended over many years, with some claims dating back several decades. Although substantial financial settlements have been announced, many survivors remain in various stages of litigation, bankruptcy proceedings, claims evaluation, and settlement distribution.
According to research maintained by Penn State Dickinson Law, 44 Catholic religious organizations had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as of March 2026. Of those proceedings, 29 had concluded and 15 remained pending.
Legal Bay continues to monitor these proceedings, particularly those involving established settlement funds, pending bankruptcy confirmations, and survivors awaiting payment.
Chris Janish, CEO of Legal Bay, commented, “We have been the premier clergy sex abuse funding firm for cases in the bankruptcy process for the last 10 years. While many of the bankruptcy cases can be extremely complex and uncertain, our dedicated legal and underwriting team has the most expertise in these cases across the country. If you have been denied for needed funding, or additional funding from previous funding, because your church or archdiocese is in bankruptcy, do not hesitate to call our 24-hour call center to get the help you need.”

New York: Major Settlements and Continuing Bankruptcy Proceedings
New York remains one of the country’s most significant jurisdictions for clergy sexual abuse litigation.
Archdiocese of New York: A proposed $800 million settlement involving approximately 1,300 childhood sexual abuse claims represents one of the largest recent developments. The proposed framework includes a reported $250,000 expedited-payment option for eligible claimants, alongside an individualized evaluation process. Final documentation, claimant participation, and implementation remain important outstanding considerations.
Diocese of Buffalo: Having entered Chapter 11 in February 2020, Buffalo continues working through its reorganization process. An amended plan and disclosure statement filed in August 2026 represent meaningful procedural developments, although final approval and individual distributions remain outstanding.
Diocese of Albany: In March 2026, the diocese and survivors’ committee announced a $148 million settlement agreement. The proposal remains subject to creditor voting and bankruptcy court approval. Negotiations involving insurance carriers may provide additional contributions toward a comprehensive resolution.
Diocese of Ogdensburg: A proposed approximately $45 million compensation trust represents progress toward resolving outstanding survivor claims. However, bankruptcy approval and claims administration remain necessary before payments can be considered assured.
Other New York dioceses have advanced further.
Diocese of Syracuse: The diocese emerged from Chapter 11 following approval of its reorganization, establishing a $176.1 million survivor compensation trust. Its bankruptcy case formally closed in February 2026, with individual claims administered independently.
Diocese of Rochester: A settlement of approximately $246 million received court approval in 2025. Individual claimants must look to the applicable settlement and trust administration procedures for payment information.
Diocese of Rockville Centre: A court-approved settlement of approximately $323 million represents another major resolution. The distinction between establishing a compensation trust and completing individual payments remains important for survivors.
California: Six Diocesan Bankruptcies Continue Toward Resolution
California remains a particularly significant jurisdiction following legislation that temporarily reopened the filing window for previously time-barred childhood sexual abuse claims.
Archdiocese of San Francisco: In June 2026, the archdiocese announced a $395 million settlement agreement in principle involving more than 500 abuse lawsuits. The proposed resolution is a substantial milestone, but implementation through the bankruptcy process and resolution of outstanding issues remain necessary.
Diocese of Oakland: In October 2026, a federal bankruptcy judge rejected the diocese’s proposed reorganization plan. The ruling highlighted disputes concerning asset valuations and compensation for nearly 330 survivors, demonstrating the difficulties that can arise even after years of negotiations.
Diocese of Sacramento: Settlement discussions continue, including an agreement in principle involving several insurers. A comprehensive reorganization plan and final settlement structure remain unresolved.
Diocese of Santa Rosa: Bankruptcy negotiations continue as the parties work toward a resolution involving survivor claims and available insurance resources.
Diocese of San Diego: The diocese remains in bankruptcy, with insurance disputes and claims-related proceedings affecting the path toward a final reorganization.
Diocese of Fresno: Mediation and plan negotiations remain ongoing, with no confirmed final compensation plan identified in the latest reviewed updates.
The Franciscan Friars of California also remain part of the broader California bankruptcy landscape, with proceedings addressing historical abuse claims and proposed compensation arrangements.
Maryland, Vermont, Louisiana, and Texas: Additional Pending Proceedings
The Archdiocese of Baltimore continues navigating competing bankruptcy proposals, survivor committee negotiations, and disputes involving available assets and insurance coverage. Its Chapter 11 proceedings remain an important unresolved component of the national litigation landscape.
The Diocese of Burlington, Vermont, continues addressing bankruptcy issues, including questions involving parish property and assets potentially available to support compensation.
The Diocese of Alexandria, Louisiana, remains in Chapter 11, with survivor claims and settlement negotiations requiring further resolution.
Additional pending proceedings include the Diocese of El Paso, Texas, and Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Scarsdale, New York. These cases further illustrate the geographic scope of unresolved Catholic institutional abuse claims.
Concluded Bankruptcies Do Not Necessarily Mean Survivors Have Been Paid
One of the most important distinctions for survivors is the difference between a bankruptcy settlement being approved and individual compensation actually being distributed.
Diocese of Camden, New Jersey: A $180 million survivor trust reached an important milestone on October 1, 2026, when the diocese announced that it had fully funded its portion. Insurance carriers were scheduled to provide additional funding later in October. Individual payment timing is determined by the independent trust.
Archdiocese of New Orleans: Following confirmation of its reorganization in December 2025, survivor compensation remains subject to trust administration and applicable claims procedures.
Other completed proceedings, including Norwich, Connecticut, demonstrate the importance of evaluating each compensation program individually rather than assuming that bankruptcy closure establishes a uniform payment schedule.
Survivors who are still waiting for settlement proceeds may wish to explore pre-settlement funding if they need help managing current expenses. Legal Bay evaluates eligible cases individually, including claims affected by complicated bankruptcy proceedings.

Legal Bay Continues Monitoring Funding Opportunities for Survivors
Legal Bay recognizes that the financial challenges facing survivors can continue long after a settlement is announced.
Bankruptcy negotiations, insurance disputes, court approval requirements, and individual claims evaluations may create substantial periods between the filing of a claim and the receipt of compensation. Even when a settlement has been announced or a compensation trust established, individual payments may not arrive according to a plaintiff’s personal financial timetable.
For eligible claimants represented by counsel, Legal Bay offers non-recourse pre-settlement funding arrangements that may provide access to financial resources while qualifying claims remain unresolved. Depending on the circumstances of the case and the applicable agreement, funding may help survivors manage household bills, medical expenses, tuition, holiday spending, and other necessary costs while they wait for their claims to progress.
Legal Bay will continue monitoring major clergy sexual abuse proceedings nationwide, with particular attention to confirmed compensation funds, pending bankruptcy resolutions, and cases progressing toward payment.
The company encourages survivors to remain in contact with their attorneys regarding individual claim status, settlement eligibility, required documentation, and expected distribution procedures.
Legal Bay does not expect major payments by year-end in any of the litigations discussed above. Plaintiffs who need funding for holiday expenses, college tuition, or other year-end obligations should apply immediately to allow time for case review and underwriting.
Funding is not guaranteed, and approval depends on the merits and status of the individual claim, supporting documentation, applicable law, and underwriting review.
How to Apply for Clergy Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Funding
Survivors with pending clergy sexual abuse lawsuits who need financial assistance do not necessarily have to wait until their cases are resolved to explore their options. Legal Bay offers pre-settlement funding and lawsuit loans for qualifying claims, subject to applicable law and the terms of the funding agreement.
Non-recourse funding is generally repaid from a successful recovery under the applicable agreement. If there is no recovery, repayment is generally not required, subject to the specific agreement and applicable law. Because an advance may reduce the amount a plaintiff ultimately receives, survivors should review the terms with their attorney before accepting funding.

Legal Bay is also updating its nationwide Archdiocese and Diocese funding list to reflect developments in clergy sexual abuse litigation and the status of compensation programs. Survivors and attorneys are encouraged to contact the company for information about potential funding eligibility as cases continue to move through the legal system.
