New AI Integrated Assignments Make Student Thinking Visible to Instructors in the AI Age

October 22, 2026 by helpdesk1 |

Packback’s new assignment formats ask students to evaluate, challenge, and
collaborate with AI while giving educators greater insight into how students
reason and learn

CHICAGO, October 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Packback, whose award-winning platform has been used by more than 2,400 colleges and universities to help students build critical thinking and writing skills, today announced the launch of AI Integrated Assignments. This new suite of assignments is built to address a growing challenge for higher education: When AI can produce polished work in seconds, a student’s final project or essay is no longer a reliable way for instructors to assess learning. Compatible with any course in any major, Packback’s AI Integrated Assignments make the learning process part of the assignment. Students plan, evaluate, challenge, and revise as they work with AI, and instructors see the reasoning and decisions behind the finished product.

Since generative AI was introduced to the general public in 2022, colleges and universities have grappled with the appropriate way to approach its use on campus. Many institutions have opted to ban AI or police its utilization in the name of academic integrity, an approach that reveals little about what students are learning and leaves graduates without practice using tools they will encounter at work. More than one-third of entry-level jobs require AI skills, but only 28% of college graduates from the Class of 2026 said their institution intentionally taught them how to use AI. Increasingly, faculty and administrators are moving past the question of how to control AI and asking what learning with AI looks like.

Packback offers multiple assignment types that allow students to gain familiarity with AI and develop the communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills necessary to engage with AI thoughtfully:

  • Teach the AI: The student explains a concept to a novice AI and corrects its errors. The AI evaluates the student’s understanding against concepts uploaded by faculty.
  • Argument Lab: The student locks in a position, then defends it against AI counterarguments aimed at their specific claims.
  • Claim-Source Verification: The AI makes claims about a source the instructor chooses. The student marks each claim “accurate,” “misleading,” or “false,” and attaches proof from the original source.
  • Co-Authored Essay: The student plans first, then accepts, rewrites, or rejects each AI suggestion, paragraph by paragraph. Their record of decision-making is turned in alongside the final draft.

The assignments are deliberately designed to challenge students to carefully evaluate, verify, revise, and push back on AI output. Draft history, transcripts, prompt logs, and student reflections are then aggregated for instructors in a “show your work” dashboard, which shows them how each student reasoned through the work. That record of the learning process is something a finished essay alone can’t provide, and it helps instructors see where a student’s understanding is strong and where they need extra support.

“AI can generate an answer in seconds. What it can’t do is decide whether that answer is right, or good, or worth trusting. That judgment belongs to the student, and it needs to be nurtured,” said Jeff Mutimer, CEO of Packback. “These assignments give students the opportunity to learn how to make those judgment calls, and grant educators and institutions proof of learning: defensible evidence that their students are actually learning in a post-AI world.”

Packback AI Integrated Learning can be incorporated with popular Learning Management Systems, including Canvas, Blackboard, and D2L Brightspace, and is compliant with federal student privacy regulations.
