New York Latino Evangelicals Support Full Participation in U.S. Census

New York, NY – Below is a statement from the Latino Leadership Circle on the 2010 U.S. Census:

“The U.S. Census is absolutely critical for resources in many of our communities.  We encourage all Hispanics whether they are citizens or undocumented immigrants to take part in the Census," stated Rev. Gabriel Salguero, Executive and Public Policy Advisor of  The Latino Leadership Circle.

The Latino Leadership Circle wants to assure well-meaning Evangelical leadership working hard on immigration reform that the Census will not work against immigration reform efforts. "Hispanic communities need to stand up and be counted for the sake of democracy , inclusion, and resources for our people," added Rev. Salguero.

The Rev. David Ramos, Founder of the Latino Leadership Circle, encouraged all clergy to continue to support the census publicly, “It is essential that Hispanics participate in the census.  Due to a host of historical issues, we have been woefully under counted in census polls.  To boycott the census would be tantamount to cutting off your nose to spite your face.  I urge my fellow clergy to inform your congregations of the importance of the census, to correct any erroneous fears associated with the process, and by all means, to encourage, facilitate, and motivate your members to fully participate.  It is time to have an accurate count of Hispanics in our country.”
