Teens at the United Nations Discuss Ways To Help Poverty-Stricken Communities

NEW YORK---Hundreds of teenagers streamed into the United Nations this week for the 6th annual Youth Assembly.Their goal: to erase poverty worldwide – community by community.

For 11 teens supported by Children International, it was a journey from poverty to the podium. Karen Galindo, 18, of Honduras, addressed the assembly plenary, sharing her experiences as an “agent of change” in her community. Her fellow CI delegates conducted workshops on community projects.

The teen delegates from Children International, a 73-year-old humanitarian organization based in Kansas City, range in age from 12 to 19. In addition to Karen, the delegates are:

  • Columbia: Adriana Hernandez Cantillo
  • Guatemala: Virginia Alejandra Morales Gomez
  • Mexico: Ana Griselda Fajardo Gutierrez
  • Ecuador: Jazmin Del Carmen Zeas Vallejo
  • Zambia: Chengo Chewe
  • Philippines: Melvin J. Yubal
  • India: Ranjit Jana
  • Dominican Republic: Jose Enrrique Pacheco
  • United States: La Toya
  • Chile: Valerie Paz Guerroro Sepulveda

The 11 delegates belong to a group of 135,000 teens from Children International’s Youth Program. The program is designed to provide teens with a positive environment in which to grow and a safe place to gather with their friends.

Children International, whose goals are to improve health and education for the poor, serves more than 320,000 needy children. More than 200,000 donors have funded 86 Community Centers in 11 countries.
