THE EMPOWERMENT HOUR ONLINE UNIVERSITY
with Kermit Eady - Earnest Mcbride
Produced by Jason Byrd
Saturday, July 18th (6pm EST/5pm CST)
This week the Empowerment Hour Online University welcomes Judith Anne Still, daughter of the great African American Composer William Grant Still. Ms. Still rescued her father's name and musical legacy from obscurity after his death in 1978. Going from an estimated 15-20 plays on the nation's airwaves at the time of his death to about 30,000 a year today is the direct result of her hard work and devotion to her father.
Our conversation will focus on some of William Grant Still's greatest achievements such as Composing the Afro American Symphony in 1931, becoming Musical Director of the Black Swan Record Company, the first major Black owned recording company, and the composition of one of America's greatest operas, Troubled Island (1949), with Langston Hughes as writer of the libretto.
We will then be joined by Mrs. Dora Mingo and a representative from the ACLU of Mississippi. The discussion will focus on Mrs. Mingo's son's plight in Mississippi State Prison. Finally we will be joined by Ayuko Babu and a Representative from National Black Arts Festival.
THE CLASS WILL BE IN SESSION THIS SATURDAY at 6pm EST/5pm CST
