UT Tyler Students Participate in UT-LSAMP Summer Research Academy

 



        Seven students at The University of Texas at Tyler are participants in the 2009 UT System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Undergraduate Research Academy, Dr. Steve Rainwater, acting chair and Chandler professor of computer science, announced. 
The UT-LSAMP program is supported by the National Science Foundation and provides undergraduate research experiences in an effort to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing graduate level studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs. 
Participants are listed by hometown. 
ARP – Blake Wilson. 
LINDALE – Jonathan Michael Comer. 
PALESTINE – Bradley Martin. 
TYLER – Afzal Ahmed, Audrey Hammack, Brittany Pierce and Lauren Thomas. 
Faculty mentors are: Dr. Jennifer Pearce, assistant professor of phyics; Dr. John Placyk, assistant professor of biology; Dr. Troy Anderson, assistant professor of biology; Dr. Tanya Shtoyko, assistant professor of chemistry; Dr. Blake Bextine, assistant professor of biology; and Dr. Ali Azghani, associate professor of biology. 

“Each student will receive a fellowship stipend for their participation, and faculty mentors receive funding for supplies and materials to support their student’s research activities,” said Rainwater, who also serves as the UT Tyler LSAMP program director. “The students will also present the results of their research projects at the annual UT-LSAMP Student Research Conference scheduled for Sept. 10 – 12 in Austin.”
