2010 Conference

"Women are at the economic heart of the developing world. And to do all this work, they need to be healthy."

Women Deliver 2010, a global conference, will be held in Washington DC on June 7-9, 2010. The theme of the conference is: "Delivering solutions for girls and women," and we plan to focus on political, economic, social/cultural, and technological solutions. This global meeting will expand on Women Deliver's hallmark of inclusivity, reaching out to new partners and new communities. With all these partners in one room, we will further prove that maternal and reproductive health is a global priority. Women Deliver 2010 will move the dialogue to the global arena with two strong messages:

The MDGs will not be achieved without investing in women.
There is just enough time, if the world commits funding now, to achieve MDG5 — additional US$10 billion annually by 2010 and US$20 billion by 2015.

A History of Success: Quick facts about the 2007 Women Deliver conference
Did You Know…

There were over 2,000 participants from 115 countries.
Participants included more than 100 government officials from more than 30 countries.
40% of the participants were men.
The conference program included over 300 speakers inspiring dialogue and debate in 118 separate sessions over 3 days.
The Ministers’ Forum brought together cabinet ministers, parliamentarians and civil society leaders from over 30 countries to shine a high-level policy spotlight on maternal and newborn health.
The conference held 6 special plenary sessions during which no other sessions ran.
There were 12 skills-building, strategy, and networking sessions on the last day that enabled participants to develop plans for future action.
17 launches of new campaigns, data, and publications in the Speakers’ Corner.
75 simultaneous sessions focused on the five conference themes of Women’s and Newborn Health, Promoting Women in the World, Expanding Financial Resources, Advancing Human Rights, and Building Political Will.
All panels on youth issues featured young speakers.

Young Women Deliver

Young women are increasingly taking leadership roles in non-governmental organizations and are a powerful force for transformative change. When we improve young women’s and girls’ lives, many benefit: not only brothers, sisters, future children, and grandchildren, but also the communities that young women engage and seek to change. As an active, productive citizen, well educated, professional, and a prepared employee, young women can break the cycle of poverty for families and nations. Yet despite potential, they remain invisible in society. This session explores the potential and actual power of young women from the unique lenses of the most important experts on the topic—young women themselves.

Words Matter: Language That Reflects Our Values and Speaks to Diverse Experiences

Joan Walsh, executive editor of Salon.com, leads a discussion of reproductive health and language. The introduction of a new paradigm for population and development ushered in new language. The phrase “sexual and reproductive health and rights” became the language of choice. This panel will discuss how well that term has served us and analyze a range of terms in use and out-of-use for their value in reflecting our values and developing public support.

Summing It Up: What Did We Learn and Where Are We Going?

From the Ministers’ Forum, Parliamentarians’ Forum, Midwifery Symposium to over 100 concurrent sessions, Women Deliver participants have addressed the key issues related to maternal health and girls’ and women’s lives. This session will include short statements from key groups as well as the key action recommendations on various themes. Hear from Petra ten Hoope-Bender, Alvaro Bermejo, Giselle Carino, Katie Chau, Gill Greer, Rajat Khosla, Betsy McCallon, Dorothy Shaw, Serra Sippel, and Women Deliver president, Jill Sheffield. Get straight answers to the most important question of the day: “What do I need to do when I get home?”

Women Need a World That Delivers

It has been said that women hold up half the sky and most of the world. But women can’t do it alone. We all need governmental and non-governmental organizations – and men – working to eradicate poverty, protect the environment, make violence against women a thing of the past, bring about peace and create secure economies. As we return home, recommitted to creating that world, we will hear from some leading change makers on what we all can do to make that world a reality.
