DALLAS - During his final sermon of the Women, Thou Art Loosed conference Bishop T.D. Jakes gave a challenge to those present: Strengthen one another. On the culmination of the three-day women's conference that drew participants ranging from Hollywood to the homeless, Bishop Jakes reminded women of the principle of Proverbs 27:17 and asked that they be “iron sharpening iron” as much outside the conference walls as they had been inside.
Some 10,000 people attended Woman, Thou Art Loosed Oct. 21-23 at The Potter’s House in Dallas. The multigenerational and multicultural crowd heard encouragement and inspiration from well-known speakers and artists. “Once you know your purpose, it changes everything," Jakes told them.
The conference opened Thursday afternoon with a segment called "Girl Talk," hosted by Serita Jakes, wife of Bishop Jakes. The panel discussion addressed real topics concerning real women such as single parenting, marriage and relationships, and recovery from devastating circumstances. The panel included actor Boris Kodjoe, who joined Mrs. Jakes in the relevant and timely discussion via Skype.
On Friday, attendees were inspired by Dr. Cindy Trimm, Dr. Cynthia James, Pastor Sheryl Brady and vocalist Karen Clark Sheard. Actress Angela Bassett also appeared as a surprise guest and highlighted Jakes' soon-to-be released movie Jumping The Broom, in which Bassett has a starring role. Jakes also showed a clip of the movie that he and his wife called a “dramedy” due to its comical handling of the conflict between two families at opposite points of the economic stratum. On the last day of the conference, Judge Glenda A. Hatchett of the syndicated TV show Judge Hatchett, shared a poignant testimony with the women as she encouraged the full capacity crowd to never give up.
“I love Bishop Jakes,” said one Chicago woman while standing in line to buy a Woman, Thou Art Loosed T-shirt. She traveled from the Windy City to attend the conference. “I can relate to his messages. At times I feel that he is speaking directly to my heart and I'm going to wear this shirt as a reminder of the impact that his sermons and this conference have made in my life.”
Women, Thou Art Loosed is an annual conference presented by The Potter’s House. Since it’s inception in 1992, the conference has attracted more than half a million women worldwide.
